BIOGRAPHY & INTRODUCTION
Sonya Shikhman is founder and managing partner of Shikhman Barristers. She is an accomplished trial and appeal lawyer, specializing exclusively in criminal defence. She has successfully defended clients facing a wide variety of criminal charges, including murder, drug trafficking, and sexual assault.
She serves as Duty Counsel at the Ontario Court of Appeal in the Pro Bono Inmate Appeals Program, assisting appellants who do not have their own lawyers. It is an honour to be appointed to this program, reserved for only the most reputable advocates in Ontario. She has taught trial advocacy at Osgoode Hall Law School and served as a judge at the prestigious Jessup Cup mooting competition in Russia, Ukraine, England, Italy, Indonesia, and Washington, D.C.. She is frequently asked by the media to provide expert legal commentary.
She has a deep commitment to freedom of speech and intellectual diversity, shaped by her experience in the Soviet Union, which is why she currently serves on the inaugural Board of Directors of the Runnymede Society, an organization of Canadian lawyers who believe in fundamental freedoms, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.
